TOWSON, Md. – One day after picking up its first Landmark
Conference victory of the season, Goucher earned No. 2 by winning
two of the three doubles matches and then going 5-1 in singles play
to register a 7-2 triumph over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) and Jeff McLeod (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) secured a point for the Gophers (3-10, 2-5 Landmark) with their 8-1 win over Steve Barrows and Nick Sottile at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton) and Henning Jakob (Berlin, Germany/Theresienschule Catholic) defeated Everett Smith and Kugen Palanisamy from Merchant Marine, 8-1.
All five of Goucher's wins during the singles competition were in straight sets. At No. 2, Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) polished off Jonathan Butanis 6-1, 6-0, and by the same score, Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) prevailed over Barrows at No. 3.
Weiss didn't drop a single game against Sottile at No. 4, McLeod downed Smith 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Jakob turned back Palanisamy 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Mariners (3-9, 0-7 Landmark) picked up their only point in singles play at No. 1 where Jeff Gulitus knocked off Barrera 6-2, 6-2.
