Gophers Bow to Crusaders in First 2009-10 Landmark Match
SELINSGROVE, Pa. Goucher came up with three wins in singles play today, just not the four the Gophers needed to overtake Susquehanna in the first Landmark Conference match of the 2009-10 season for both teams. The Crusaders (5-3, 1-0 Landmark), who led 2-1 after the doubles competition, held on for a 5-4 victory.
Brooks, Weiss Prevail in Singles Play, Record 8-4 Win at No. 2 Doubles

season for both teams. The Crusaders (5-3, 1-0 Landmark), who led
2-1 after the doubles competition, held on for a 5-4 victory.
Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) and Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) were victorious at No. 2 doubles for the Gophers (1-7, 0-1 Landmark) and were responsible for two of Goucher's three wins during the singles competition. Brooks polished off Susquehanna's Michael Hickey 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Weiss disposed of William Mellor 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4; together they recorded an 8-4 triumph over Hickey and Matthew Quadrini.
The Gophers picked up their remaining point at No. 5 singles where Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) defeated Alec Green 7-5, 6-4.
After losing the first set, Goucher's Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) came back to even his match against Richard Fitzsimmons at No. 3 singles, but Fitzsimmons regrouped and pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory.
