Hemelt Seals Deal by Completing Win at No. 6 Singles
KINGS POINT, N.Y. The point Dave Hemelt (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) earned for his 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Kyle Kempinsky at No. 6 singles put Goucher over the top against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy today, giving the Gophers their first Landmark Conference win of the 2009-10 season.
Baum, Weiss Also Prevail in Singles Play as Gophers Nip Mariners

In addition to Hemelt, Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) were victorious in singles play for the Gophers in their 5-4 triumph over the Mariners (4-3, 0-3 Landmark). Baum, in the line-up at No. 2, defeated William Coulter 6-2, 6-1; Weiss polished off Patricia Greene 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.
At first singles, Jeff Gulitus was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) of the Gophers.
The Gophers (2-9, 1-2 Landmark) needed only a 3-3 split of the singles matches because they gamed a 2-1 lead in the doubles competition. At No. 1, Weiss and Brooks recorded an 8-6 victory over Gulitus and Coulter, plus Baum and Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) knocked off Greene and Biondi Phua, 8-2, at No. 2.
