Gophers Take Lead Into Singles, Come Up Short
TOWSON, Md. Goucher enjoyed a 2-1 lead over Juniata at the conclusion of doubles play today, but the Eagles prevailed in four of the six singles matches and pulled out a 5-4 Landmark Conference victory over the Gophers.
Baum Prevails at No. 1 Singles, Wins with Leonard at No. 2 Doubles
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher enjoyed a 2-1 lead over Juniata at the
conclusion of doubles play today, but the Eagles prevailed in four
of the six singles matches and pulled out a 5-4 Landmark Conference
victory over the Gophers.
During the doubles competition, the Gophers (3-11, 1-3 Landmark) picked up wins from Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) and Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) at No. 1 and Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) at No. 2. Brooks and Weiss downed Jarrad Silver and Arnab Chakrabarti, 8-6; Leonard and Baum recorded an 8-3 win over Ross Imbrie and Scott Andrews.
Baum was matched against Silver at No. 1 singles and came out on top 6-3, 7-5.
There were a pair of singles matches that went to a third set. At No. 2, Brooks defeated Chakrabarti 6-2, 4-6, 6-4; at No. 4, Juniata's Tucker Good came back from being down a set to knock off Leonard 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Eagles (6-10, 1-3 Landmark) won the remaining three singles matches in straight sets.
