TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's No. 1 doubles team and two of its
singles players overcame significant deficits to record three wins
that enabled the Gophers to secure a 6-3 triumph over Stevenson
this afternoon.
The Gophers (4-14) could have come out of doubles play trailing 2-1, but Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) rallied from 6-1 and 7-2 deficits to defeat Ted Cooke and Shawn Kelley, 9-8 (1). Because Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) and Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) posted a convincing 8-1 win over Ben Petasky and Shawn Hellman at No. 2, Goucher instead was ahead 2-1 entering the singles competition.
At No. 2 singles, Brooks was down 5-2 in the first set against Petasky, but proceeded to win the final 11 games to pull out a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Goucher's Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) rallied from being down a set to beat Kevin Stamm 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) at No. 5.
Goucher's other two wins in singles play were registered by Weiss at No. 3 and Leonard at No. 4. Weiss turned back Kelley 6-4, 6-0; Leonard finished off Randy Speck 6-2, 6-4.
In addition to prevaling at No. 3 doubles, the Mustangs (5-11) picked up two points in singles play thanks to straight-set wins by Cooke at No. 1 and Helman at No. 6.
