MADISON, N.J. — The Landmark Conference today announced the names of the 28 student-athletes who make up the 2011 Spring Landmark All-Academic Team, which recognizes two male and two female athletes who have excelled athletically and academically from each of the eight Landmark institutions which chose to submit nominees.
Goucher's four representatives on the fourth annual Spring Landmark All-Academic Team are Bryce Carson (Shillington, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School), a rising junior on the men's lacrosse team, and three student-athletes who graduated in May: Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) from the women's tennis team, Hannah Southworth (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) from the women's indoor track and field team, and Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) from the men's tennis team.
Each school selected its four nominees, all of whom had to compete in any of the eight sports for which the Landmark Conference conducts a championship in the spring. In addition, the nominees had to be a sophomore, junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
In his first season as a starter on close defense for Goucher's men's lacrosse program, Carson supplied the Gophers with one goal, one assist, 47 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers in 2011. A management major, he has achieved a 3.66 GPA through four semesters.
Pulupa, who also represented Goucher on the Spring 2010 Landmark All-Academic Team, was partnered with Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) to form one of the three doubles teams that earned first-team All-Landmark Conference recognition by going 7-3 in 2010-11. She also recorded six victories during singles play while competing exclusively at No. 1 for the Gophers.
Pulupa, who majored in biological sciences and physics and minored in chemistry, completed her undergraduate education with a 3.95 cumulative GPA.
Southworth, a sociology and Spanish major who graduated with a 3.67 GPA, placed ninth in the 10,000 meters at the 2011 Landmark Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She is one of only two individuals in the history of Goucher's women's outdoor track and field program to complete the 10,000-meter runs in under 42:25.
This was Weiss' third time on the Landmark All-Academic Team (previous selections in Spring 2009 and Spring 2010). He is a four-time letterwinner who appeared at every position in Goucher's singles line-up over the course of his career and went 3-7 in singles play in 2010-11. The communications major with a minor in Spanish graduated with a 3.84 GPA.
