TOWSON, Md. — A homestand on which Goucher is scheduled to play four matches over six days got off to a rough start this afternoon when the Gophers were handed a 9-0 setback by St. Mary's (Md.).
The Gophers (0-12) managed to win only three games in the three doubles matches as the Seahawks (11-2) quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Andrew Gear and Arvin Wong turned back David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) and Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings), 8-1; at No. 2, Thomas Hoesman and Kyle Feeley defeated Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East), 8-0.
Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) and Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) went at No. 3 doubles for Goucher and fell to John Feighner and Jay Guzzone, 8-2.
The Seahawks were equally as dominant in singles play as they didn't drop a set in the six matches. Gear faced Spivey at No. 1 and prevailed 6-0, 6-3; Wong was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Pelensky at No. 2.
Hoesman topped Csete 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, Feeley recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Murnin at No. 4, and Feighner pinned a 6-0, 6-0 setback on Seth Manfield (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) at No. 5.
Guzzone took on Adair at No. 6 singles and posted a 6-0, 6-3 win.
