TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) nearly took the second set of his match at No. 1 singles, but minor successes were few and far between for the Gophers today in a home Landmark Conference match against Drew.
After dropping the opening set against Raul Smego, Spivey found himself at 6-6 in the second set before dropping a tiebreaker in 10 points, which allowed Smego to prevail 6-2, 7-6 (3).
The only other two singles matches in which the Gophers (0-13, 0-3 Landmark) were able to win a game were at No. 2 where Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings) bowed to Adam Gerber 6-1, 6-0 and No. 6 where Ryan Johnson defeated Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) 6-2, 6-1.
The Rangers (4-4, 3-0 Landmark), who have claimed the past four Landmark Conference titles, allowed Goucher to win only two games during doubles competition.
