Gophers Tame Lions for First Victory of 2011-12 Campaign

Pelensky, Csete Prevail 6-0, 6-0 in Singles for Goucher
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was victimized by some Cardinals, Eagles and Seahawks, as well as some Greyhounds, Marlins and Mustangs during an 18-match losing streak that dated back to the 2010-11 season. But that skid came to an end this afternoon when the Gophers tamed some Lions.
Goucher picked up its inaugural win of the 2011-12 campaign and its first since a 9-0 triumph over Lancaster Bible on April 6, 2011, by turning back Bryn Athyn, 9-0.
Two of Goucher's doubles teams — David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) and Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings) at No. 1 and Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) at No. 3 — prevailed 8-0. At No. 2, Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) and Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Duncan Asplundh and Dan Cook.
The Lions (0-3) managed to win only eight games during the singles competition.
Spivey was victorious at No. 1 for the Gophers (1-13) as he pinned a 6-0, 6-1 setback on Micah Alden. Pelensky and Csete both prevailed 6-0, 6-0: Pelensky over Nicholas Duclos at No. 2 and Csete over Asplundh at No. 3.
Manfield came out on top of Cook 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, Adair defeated Blake McCurdy 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and Blackman was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Kyle Watters at No. 6.
