Gophers Bow to Spartans Despite Spivey's Solid Effort

TOWSON, Md. — Sophomore David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) picked up his third win of the season at No. 1 singles for Goucher thjis afternoon, but the Gophers came up short in their match against York, falling 7-2.
Spivey was the last man still on the court for Goucher as he and York's Eric Cooperman traded wins in the first two sets. With the outcome of the overall match already determined, a match breaker was substituted for the third set and Spivey prevailed in 13 points to conclude his 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) triumph.
The Spartans (6-5) won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets. At No. 2, Tyler Cheatham turned back Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings) 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3, Philip Myers defeated Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) 6-2, 6-3, and at No. 4, Nathaniel Hoskins was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East).
James Villari topped Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Matthew Rosenkrantz recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) at No. 6.
Spivey also had a hand in the second point the Gophers (1-14) secured as he and Pelensky teamed up for a 9-7 victory over Cooperman and Rosenkrantz at No. 1 doubles.
