Gophers Absorb 9-0 Punch from Cardinals
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher's losing streak against Catholic in the sport of men's tennis reached five matches today when the Gophers traveled to the nation's capital for a Landmark Conference match and were soundly defeated by by the Cardinals, 9-0.
Spivey Suffers 6-2, 6-3 Setback to Utrie at No. 1 Singles
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher's losing streak against Catholic in the sport of men's tennis reached five matches today when the Gophers traveled to the nation's capital for a Landmark Conference match and were soundly defeated by by the Cardinals, 9-0.
In sweeping the three doubles matches, the Cardinals (12-2, 4-1 Landmark) allowed the Gophers to win only four games. At No. 1, Cassian Utrie and Jean Paul Roman turned back David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) and Nick Pelensky (Billings, Mont./Billings), 8-2.
Utrie and Spivey met up again at No. 1 singles with Utrie prevailing 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2 Roman was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Pelensky.
Brian Bradley topped Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, Joe Peters knocked off Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Jason Quisberth pinned a 6-1, 6-0 setback on Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) at No. 5. Catholic's Kyle Kramer was victorious over Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
The last time the Gophers (2-16, 0-5 Landmark) came out on top of the Cardinals was a 6-3 triumph in the first round of the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
