Spartans Send Gophers to 6-3 Defeat in Home Opener

Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Joey Caracappa (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Preparatory School) accounted for all three of Goucher's points. The duo teamed up for an 8-2 victory over Kaltrin Bullaj and Daniel Erk at No. 1 doubles. The Spartans (3-0), though, dropped only two games in the remaining two doubles matches.
The Gophers (1-1) briefly held a 3-2 lead after victories from Hoesman and Caracappa in singles. Hoesman bested George Sosa 6-1, 6-2, at from the top spot, while Caracappa handled Jake Greenstein 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
York won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, and the match was sealed with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 4. Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) came closest to earning an extra point for Goucher, but he ultimately fell 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) to Matt Rosenkrantz at the No. 3 position.
The Gophers will next compete at the ITA Southeast Regional next weekend. The three-day tournament, held in Fredericksburg, Va., begins next Saturday.
