Hoesman, Three Freshmen Prevail in Singles Matches

WESTMINSTER, Md. — Goucher wrapped up the fall portion of its 2014-15 schedule today by pinning a 6-2 setback on McDaniel.
The Gophers (2-1) picked up wins from Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) at No. 1 doubles and Joey Caracappa (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Preparatory School) and Britt Shortle (Lake Mary, Fla./Trinity Preparatory School) at No. 2 to enters the singles competition with a 2-1 lead. Hoesman and Bescoby handed Satchel McCarthy and Phil Jorgensen an 8-4 loss; the all-freshmen pairing of Caracappa and Shortle recorded an 8-2 victory over Ryan Salomon and Daniel Xinis.
Hoesman, Caracappa and Shortle were triumphant in singles, as well. Hoesman, stationed at first singles, defeated McCarthy 6-4, 6-4, boosting his career singles record to 29-18.
Caracappa improved to 3-0 at No. 2 this season by knocking off Jorgensen 6-1, 6-3, and Shortle battled back from being down a set to dispose of Xinis 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
Goucher's other win during singles came from freshman Josh Goldberg (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County), who polished off Corey Glocker 6-2, 6-3.
The Green Terror (1-1) earned their two points with wins at third doubles and No. 3 singles. The No. 6 singles match went unfinished as it was in the early stages of the second set when it became too dark to continue playing.
