Gophers Begin Busy Week with Shutout of Cabrini

Goucher (4-2) dropped only seven games in its six singles wins to quickly dispatch of the Cavaliers (0-3). Cabrini was playing in its first match of the spring.
The closest matchup came at No. 1 doubles, where Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Joey Caracappa (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Preparatory School) ultimately overcame Anthony DiCicco and Alijah Broadnax by an 8-5 score. Jack Hodges (London, England/Shrewsbury School) and Britt Shortle (Lake Mary, Fla./Trinity Preparatory School) surrendered just two games at No. 2 doubles, while William Felinski (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) and John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) emerged with an 8-1 win at No. 3.
Hodges, who was named Landmark Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week last Monday, moved up to No. 1 singles for the first time and handed a 6-1, 6-1 setback to DiCicco. Hoesman and Josh Goldberg (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) each lost only one game at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) and Chad Resnik (Miami, Fla./Pinecrest School) registered 6-0, 6-0 triumphs from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) defeated Hugo Ballon 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to earn the other point for the Gophers.
The match was played at Harford CC, and Goucher topped the host Fighting Owls 6-3 earlier in the morning. Harford is currently ranked 10th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the Division I junior/community college level.
The Gophers will now embark on their spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C., with an 8 a.m. matchup against FDU-Florham the first match on their schedule tomorrow morning.
