Gophers Victorious in Home Opener Against St. Mary's

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season with an 8-1 non-conference triumph over St. Mary's College of Maryland at the Schroedl Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
- Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) and Joshua Noel (Ennis, Texas/Ennis) picked up Goucher's (1-2) first point of the day with an 8-1 win at No. 3.
- Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) posted an 8-4 win at No. 1.
- Calis Nguyen (Houston, Texas/School of the Woods) and Jackson Beam (Knightdale, N.C./Knightdale) were edged 8-6 at No. 2 by St. Mary's (4-1).
- Cerpa prevailed in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 3, winning 6-2, 7-6 (2).
- Adebamgbe earned Goucher's first singles point with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2.
- Kane's 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 sealed the match win for the Gophers.
- Noel earned his first collegiate dual-match singles win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4.
- Nguyen was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 5, while Ryan Wartenberg (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 6.
- The win was first-year head coach Clay Allen's first win at Goucher.
- Kane picked up his first singles win of the season.
- Nguyen improved to 2-1 in dual match singles play on the season.
- Goucher remains home next weekend, hosting Marymount (Va.) next Saturday at 1 pm at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
