Gophers Open Season at Goucher Invitational
TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's tennis team opened its season as it hosted the four-team Goucher Invitational Saturday at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
Jackson Beam (Knightdale, N.C./Knightdale) reached the finals of the No. 4 singles draw, defeating Matt Rau of Gettysburg 8-3. He fell in the final to Harford Community College's Jesse Faro 8-4.
Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) won the third place match at No. 1 singles by a score of 8-3 over Siddharth Byreddy of Ramapo. Calis Nguyen (Houston, Texas/School of the Woods) prevailed in the No. 2 third place match 8-4 over Kenny Elliott of Ramapo.
Newcomers Gabe Naftoly (Newburyport, Mass./Berwick Academy) and Theo Lucke (Ahlen, Germany) also prevailed in their third place matches. Naftoly was an 8-1 winner at No. 3, while Lucke won 8-4 at No. 5.
Beam and Nguyen won the third place match at No. 1 doubles 4-1 before their opponent retired. At second doubles Naftoly and Lucke were 8-3 winners in the third place match.
Goucher will be in action next weekend at the Loyola Invitational.
