Singles Sweep Moves Gophers Past Royals

TOWSON, Md. - Buoyed by a sweep of all six singles matches, the Goucher College men's tennis team downed the University of Scranton 8-1 Sunday afternoon at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
- Goucher (3-7, 2-0 Landmark) staked itself to a 2-1 lead after doubles.
- Tadeo Asprella (La Plata, Argentina / Instituto Jose Manuel Estrada) and Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) posted an 8-2 triumph at No. 2.
- Jackson Beam (Knightdale, N.C./Knightdale) and Calis Nguyen (Houston, Texas/School of the Woods) posted an 8-5 win at No. 1.
- Scranton (4-8, 2-1) picked up its lone point of the afternoon at No. 3.
- All six Gopher singles wins came in straight sets.
- At No. 1, Cerpa battled for a 7-5, 6-2 win.
- Nguyen won his first set 7-6 (7-5) and led 1-0 in the second set when his opponent retired.
- Asprella clinched his match with a second set tiebreak win, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4.
- Beam posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3.
- Gabe Naftoly (Newburyport, Mass./Berwick Academy) and Theo Lucke (Ahlen, Germany / Städtisches Gymnasium Ahlen) won at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
- Asprella, Beam and Naftoly each won their third straight singles match.
- Goucher has won two straight and seven of the last nine against the Royals.
- Goucher heads to Elizabethtown on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 pm Landmark Conference match.
- The Gophers return home Saturday, April 8, hosting Drew in a rematch of the 2022 Landmark championship match at 1 pm at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
