Gophers Wrap Up Landmark Top Seed on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's tennis team wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championship and at least a share of the league's regular season title with an 8-1 win over Moravian University on Senior Day at the Schroedl Tennis Center.
- The Gophers (11-8, 8-0 Landmark) swept doubles from Moravian (15-4, 6-2)
- Gabe Naftoly and Calis Nguyen got the scoring started with an 8-4 win at No. 1.
- Unai Laguardia Alvarez and Tadeo Asprella posted an 8-3 win at No. 3, while Angel Cerpa and Benedikt Rummel posted an 8-5 win at No. 2.
- Cerpa picked up Goucher's first singles point with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4.
- Naftoly clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2.
- Laguardia Alvarez posted a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 1, while Asprella was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at No. 3.
- Rummel kept rolling with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6.
- At No. 5, Nguyen fell in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 10-6.
- Goucher has won four in a row and seven of its last eight.
- The Gophers will enter the Landmark Championship for the first time since 2019 as the top seed, also the last time the Gophers won the regular season title.
- Goucher will host a Landmark semifinal on Friday, May 3.
- Rummel has posted 10 straight singles wins and is 13-2 on the season, while Naftoly won his fourth in a row.
- Cerpa won the 48th doubles match of his career, moving him into sole possession of seventh in program history.
- Laguardia Alvarez and Asprella won their fifth in a row in doubles play, while Cerpa and Rummel won their third straight.
- The Gophers honored Cerpa, their lone senior, prior to Sunday's match.
- Goucher closes out the regular season Thursday when it travels to Susquehanna for a 4 pm Landmark Conference match.
