Goucher Athletics Announces Scholar-Athlete Award Winner
BALTIMORE, Md. – Marcus Montisano (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), a member of the Goucher College men's swimming team, has been named the Scholar Award winner.
The Scholar-Athlete Award has been presented annually, since 1923, to a member of the junior class who has maintained high standards of academic achievement and consistently demonstrated varied and admirable participation in athletics and extra-curricular activities. In choosing a recipient, coaches and staff will give weight to qualities in the following manner: 70 percent academic background; 20 percent athletic achievement; 10 percent extra-curricular experience.
"When I think of the Scholar-Athlete Award, presented since 1923, to a member of the junior class in high academic standing, I can't think of anyone else other than Marcus Montisano," said swimming head coach Tom Till. "He has served as a team rep on the Gopher Leadership Academy, a team academic mentor, and has finished his four-year degree at Goucher in just three years, I proudly present to you Marcus Montisano for the Scholar-Athlete Award."
Montisano, who has a 4.0-grade point average, swam in the B Final of the 100 and 200 breast at the 2019 Landmark Conference Championships and posted personal-best times in the 50 free and the 100 breast at that championship. He also notched his best times in the 200 free, 500 free, and 200 breast at the 2020 championships. He will head to Johns Hopkins University in the fall as part of Goucher's 3+2 Engineering program.
"It's such an honor to receive this award," said Montisano. "I would like to thank my coaches and my teammates for supporting me and helping me be the best swimmer that I can be. I would also like to thank my professors and classmates because I would not be here without all of those people."
Along with Montisano, Caroline Altman (Las Vegas, Nev./Adelson Educational Campus) (women's soccer), Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) (women's lacrosse), Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) (men's tennis), Matt Sanders (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and Jaime Roche (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) (field hockey) were also nominated.
