Gophers Open Season Against Hood and Stevenson
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Goucher College swim teams opened the 2021-22 season at a tri-meet against Hood College and host Stevenson University at the Rosenberg Aquatic Center at the McDonogh School on Saturday.
Goucher's women's squad defeated Stevenson 124-57 but was defeated by Hood 117-80. The men fell to the Mustangs (81-64) and the Blazers (141-38).
The Gopher women swam three personal-best times on the afternoon. Ella Robinson (Canajoharie, N.Y. / Canajoharie) won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.36. Alejandra Berry-Ruiz (New Haven, Conn. / Amity) placed fourth in the 200 IM with a personal-best 2:37.03 effort, while Kelci Wood (Spencer, Ind. / Owen Valley) swam a time of 26.38 seconds for her portion of the 200-yard medley relay.
Wood also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle event with a 59.60-second swim. Robinson placed second in the 500-yard freestyle race with a time of 5:54.10.
Olivia Reichardt (Monument, Colo. / Palmer) placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.57 seconds. Coming in right behind her in fourth was Jamie Damm (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) who placed fourth with a swim of 28.39 seconds.
Darcy McFarland (East Hampton, N.Y. / East Hampton) was second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.36.
The 200 medley relay team of McFarland, Robinson, Barry-Ruiz and Wood took first with a time of 2:00.50.
For the men,Jackson Penner (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 23.05 seconds. He also swam a 12:17.41 in the 1000-yard freestyle event.
Richie Bialik (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown) was fourth out of six finishers in the 100-yard free event with a 57.33-second effort. Bialik also swam a personal-best 1:28.86 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Goucher swimming teams host their home opener next Saturday, October 23, when they welcome Immaculata and Elizabethtown to the Von Borries Aqauatic Center. Meet time is slated for 1 pm.
