Jackson Penner Swims "Ironman", Gophers Split With Juniata
TOWSON, Md. - Senior Jackson Penner(Newille, Pa. / Big Spring) swam in all nine events for the Goucher College men's swimming team Saturday afternoon at the von Borries Aquatic Center as the Gophers picked up a 62-49 win over Juniata College. The Gopher women's team was edged by the Eagles 105-98.
Penner swam in three events officialy during his "Ironman", a tradition that dates back to the program's beginnings. He won the 50 freestyle with a 24.84-second effort, finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.45, and was second in the 500 free with a time of 6:11.90.
Penner also swam the 1000 freestyle (12:08.24), 200 free (2:05.87), 200 IM (2:34.63), 100 free (59.58), 100 backstroke (1:14.97) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.98).
Liam McDonald (Cary, N.C. / Saint Francis) posted a time of 3:04.28 in the 200 IM. Sean Swanson (Los Angeles, Calif. / New Roads) recorded a time of 1:27.13 in the 100 backstroke and 1:26.49 in the 100 breaststroke.
For the women, Kelci Wood (Spencer, Ind. / Owen Valley) and Ella Robinson (Canajoharie, N.Y. / Canajoharie) each won a pair of events for Goucher. Wood was fastest in the 50 free (26.84 seconds), edging teammate Olivia Reichardt (Monument, Colo. / Palmer) by .48 seconds. In the 100 free Wood placed first with a time of 59.65 seconds.
Robinson took home first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:25.46 while in the 100 breaststroke she posted a time of 1:14.44 to take top honors.
Wood, Avery McEachern (Cincinnati, Ohio / Summit Country Day), Caitlin Cunningham (Schwenksville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley) and Darcy McFarland (East Hampton, N.Y. / East Hampton) were first in the 200 freestyle relay, edging a relay squad from Juniata by 0.07 seconds with a time of 1:51.54.
McEachern was second in the 200 free with a time of 2:18.84. McFarland placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:07.88).
Alejandra Barry-Ruiz (New Haven, Conn. / Amity) took home second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:08.20.
Goucher is back in action Saturday, November 13 when it travels to Catholic for a 1 pm meet.
