Gophers Open Swimming Season Against Stevenson
TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2023-24 season against Stevenson University at the von Borries Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs swept the Gophers, winning 162-38 on the women's side while the men were victorious 165-25.
The women's 200 medley relay team of Darcy McFarland, Ella Robinson, Olivia Reichardt and Avery McEachern finished second with a time of 2:02.66. The women's 200 freestyle relay also placed second, coming in at 1:57.56. That relay consisted of Reichardt, McEachern, Emily Roat and McFarland.
McFarland placed third in the 200 IM with a swim of 2:38.68. Robinson placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke, posting a time of 1:16.03. She narrowly missed third in the 100 free, missing third by .05 seconds with a time of 1:02.01.
Madison Veld took third in the 1000 freestyle in her Goucher debut, getting edged by 1.11 seconds by second place with a time of 14:00.43. Alana Moore and Emily Strickland came in fourth and fifth in the 50 free with times of 31:51 and 32.07, respectively. McEachern placed fourth in the 500 free with a time of 6:33.42.
For the men, James Piland placed second in his collegiate debut in the 50 free, swimming in 24.92 seconds. Christian Houck took fourth in the same race (26.47). Piland also took third in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.13.
Ben Graff took second in the 100 free with a time of 53.87 seconds. He also was third in the 1000 freestyle, checking in at 11:40.57.
Goucher is back in action next Saturday, hosting Juniata College in a 1 pm meet at the von Borries Aquatic Center.
