Gophers Set Four School Records to Open Season at TCNJ Open
NEW YORK CITY - The Goucher College women's track and field team set a total of four program records as the Gopher women's and men's programs opened their seasons at the TCNJ Indoor Open at the 168th Street Armory Saturday evening.
First year Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw (Bethesda, Md./Cheverly STEM Education Center) set program records in both the 600 and 1000-meter runs. She took home first place in the 1000 with a time of 3:20.22, bettering Marisa Long's mark from 2007 by over nine seconds. In the 600, she placed second with a time of 1:39.13, shattering the previous mark set by Amy McLellan in 2007 by over 22 seconds.
Junior Tahira Bakare (Silver Spring, Md./Archbishop Carroll) set the school record in the 300 with a time of 43.58 seconds, breaking the record set by Goucher Hall of Famer Jaclyn Kellon in 2010 of 44.31 seconds. She placed ninth overall. Dorian Cheney (Bryans Road, Md./North Point) won the high jump and broke her own record previously shared with Kiri Alston-Buck with a 1.57-meter mark.
Bakare qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash and finished seventh overall with a time of 8.19 seconds.
Cheney and Carter Hinton-Ayodele (Bowie, Md./Bowie) both qualified for the finals in the long jump. Cheney placed fifth with a 5.25-meter jump, an indoor personal best, while Hinton-Ayodele was eighth with a 4.95-meter mark.
Sarah Roth (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) reached the finals of the women's weight throw and finished eighth with a toss of 11.27 meters.
For the men, Trey Simonanis placed ninth in the 1000, while Deonte Lewis (Fort Washington, Md./Crossland) competed in the 60 and 300-meter dashes.
Goucher returns to action on Friday, January 13 when it competes in the LVC Dutchmen Invitational at Lebanon Valley College.
