Gophers Return to Action at Frank Colden Invitational
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Goucher College indoor track and field teams returned to action Saturday at the Frank Colden Invitational hosted by Ursinus College at the Floy Lewis Bakes Center. The Gophers turned in several strong performances, led by first year Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw (Adelphi, Md./Cheverly STEM Education Center) winning the women's 400.
Thornton-Fillyaw bettered her personal best by over two seconds in the 400, recording a time of 1:00.50 to edge Moravian's Crystal Robinson, a former Landmark Conference champion in the event, by 0.67 seconds. Her time is the second-fastest in the Landmark this season.
She was also part of two women's relays on the day. The 4x200 relay comprised of Thornton-Fillyaw, Jaelan Gabriel (Houston, Texas/Dulles), Tahira Bakare (Silver Spring, Md./Archbishop Carroll) and Summer James (Westminster, Md./Westminster) placed third with a time of 1:53.71. The 4x400 relay placed fourth, with Thornton-Fillyaw, Bakare, Gabriel and Emma Kistner (Woodlawn, Md./Mount de Sales) posting a time of 4:19.90.
Gabriel placed fifth in the triple jump with an indoor personal best of 10.11 meters.
Carter Hinton-Ayodele (Bowie, Md./Bowie) debuted in the pentathlon and placed third with 2,405 points. Hinton-Ayodele finished second in both the long jump (5.05 meters) and the shot put (8.51 meters).
For the men, first year Deonte Lewis (Fort Washington, Md./Crosslands) finished 14th out of 61 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a mark of 7.377 seconds. In the 200 he placed 10th out of 68 with a 23.78 second effort. Mustafa Honeyblue (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) was 11th out of 63 in the 400 with a time of 54.25 seconds.
The men's 4x400 relay squad finished fourth out of 17 entries with a time of 3:40.65. The relay was made up of Lewis, Honeyblue, Zyad Yousof (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Sean Whitfield (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic).
Goucher will have athletes in action at a pair of meets next Friday, February 10. The Gophers will be competing at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University as well as the River Hawk Showdown hosted by Susquehanna.
