Thornton-Fillyaw Wins 800, Three Program Records Fall at Landmark Championships
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Goucher College women's track and field first year Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw (Adelphi, Md./Cheverly STEM Eduction Center) won the women's 800 meter run in a program-record 2:12.23 to highlight the Gophers' second and final day at the 2023 Landmark Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday at Moravian University's Breidegam Track. Goucher set a total of three school records on Sunday.
Thornton-Fillyaw, who was also the Landmark women's indoor 800 champion, defeated Catholic's Emily Moehringer by 3.04 seconds. Her time is the fastest in the Landmark this season and No. 12 nationally based on results entering Sunday. Thornton-Fillyaw's time is also the fifth-fastest in Landmark Conference history.
The men's relay tandem of Deonte Lewis (Fort Washington, Md./Crossland), Mark Martin (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico), Joshua Stevenson (Hyattsville, Md./Parkdale) and Sean Whitfield (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) set two school records on the day. In the 4x100 they placed fourth with a time of 43.58 seconds, bettering the previous mark of 44.35 seconds set in 2007. In the 4x400 the quartet posted a time of 3:27.99, besting the old mark established in 2008 (3:31.29) by 3.3 seconds. The Gophers placed fifth.
Sophomore Carter Hinton-Ayodele (Bowie, Md./Bowie) finished second in the women's triple jump with a jump of 11.25 meters. Jaelan Gabriel (Houston, Texas/Dulles) placed sixth with a mark of 10.65 meters, while Jordan Dumas (Elkridge, Md./Oakland Mills) was 10th, coming in with a mark of 9.82 meters.
Sarah Roth (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) placed fourth in the women's hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 40.02 meters. In the women's shot put Kya Taylor (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie County) placed seventh with a throw of 10.74 meters, her top effort of the season.
The women's 4x100 relay placed fourth, coming in at 50.19 seconds, the top time for the season. Sunday's relay consisted of Gabriel, Tahira Bakare (Silver Spring, Md./Archbishop Carroll), Hinton-Ayodele and Dorian Cheney (Bryans Road, Md./North Point).
Whitfield placed 10th in the men's 800 with a personal-best 1:58.08.
Goucher's women placed sixth compiling 41 points for the meet, while the men came in seventh.
The Gophers host the 2023 ECAC Division III Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 12 at Gopher Stadium, with field events beginning at 11 am and action on the track beginning at 2 pm.
