Women's Track and Field Claims Second Straight ECAC Outdoor Crown
TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College women's track and field team claimed its second straight ECAC Division III Outdoor Championship on Friday as it hosted the 2023 championship meet at Gopher Stadium. The Gophers, who collected a total of 170 points, outdistanced Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) (108) and Hood (93).
The Goucher men placed ninth with a total of 17 points.
The women took home a total of 14 top-three finishes en route to the title, winning a pair of events. Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw (Adelphi, Md./Cheverly STEM Education Center) took home gold in the 800, posting a time of 2:32.69. She set a school record in the 400, posting a time of 59.12 seconds to place second, while Thornton-Fillyaw also came in second in the 1500 with a 4:57.64 effort.
The women's 4x100 relay squad of Jaelan Gabriel (Houston, Texas/Dulles), Tahira Bakare (Silver Spring, Md./Archbishop Carroll), Carter Hinton-Ayodele (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Dorian Cheney (Bryans Road, Md./North Point) also claimed gold with a winning time of 50.56 seconds.
Hinton-Ayodele came in second in the triple jump with a season-best 11.90 meter leap. That mark currently stands tied for No. 16 in Division III. Gabriel came in fourth with an 11.13 meter mark.
Cheney finished second in the long jump (5.19 meters), while Hinton-Ayodele was third at 5.18 meters. Gabriel came in fourth at 4.83 meters. Cheney also claimed silver in the high jump with a 1.51-meter effort.
Bakare and Gabriel both qualified for the 100-meter dash final, with Bakare placing second at 12.99 seconds, while Gabriel was fourth at 13.42 seconds. Bakare had the fastest time in the prelims, clocking a 13.02. Bakare was also second in the 200-meter dash (26.86), with Gabriel claiming fifth (27.86).
Kya Taylor (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie County) placed second in a pair of throwing events. She came in second in the discus with a throw of 30.48 meters, while her 11.21-meter shot put toss was also good for second. Sarah Roth (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) was fourth in the hammer throw (37.28 meters), while Lydia Bailey (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) led the Gophers in the javelin with a 26.27-meter mark to place fourth.
The women's 4x400 relay of Thornton-Fillyaw, Hinton-Ayodele, Jordan Dumas (Elkridge, Md./Oakland Mills) and Cheney came in second with a time of 4:34.59.
The men's 4x100 relay of Deonte Lewis (Fort Washington, Md./Crossland), Sean Whitfield (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic), Mark Martin (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) and Joshua Stevenson (Hyattsville, Md./Parkdale) established a school record for the second straight week, coming in fourth with a time of 43.49 seconds, lowering their mark from the Landmark Championships by 0.09 seconds.
Stevenson placed second in the 100 meter dash prelims with a time of 11.22 seconds. He ran an 11.23 in the final to come in sixth. Whitfield ran a time of 52.83 in the men's 400 to come in fifth, while Martin was fourth in the long jump with a 6.00-meter effort.
Goucher will have select athletes competing in the Widener Final Qualifier on Monday, May 15.
