Gophers Post Several Strong Performances at Cardinal Classic
LANDOVER, Md. - The Goucher College men's and women's indoor track and field team posted several strong performances at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Catholic University at the PG Sports and Learning Complex on Saturday.
For the men, first year Aidan Kress bettered his own school record in the triple jump, posting a mark of 12.86 meters to place eighth overall. Kress jumped a 12.63 in the season-opening TCNJ Indoor Open.
Sophomore Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw took second and first among college runners in the women's 800 meter, posting a time of 2:18.67. That time currently ranks No. 22 nationally for Thornton-Fillyaw, who qualified for NCAA indoor and outdoor nationals in the 800 last season.
First year Alana Acker narrowly missed qualifying for the women's 60 meter dash final. In the prelims she ran an 8.24 to take 10th while in the semifinals she was 12th, coming in at 8.27 seconds.
Jay Briston finished 11th out of 45 runners in the men's 200, checking in with a time of 23.43 seconds. In the men's 60 prelims he came in 13th at 7.30 seconds.
The men's distance medley relay team of Jair Smith, Johan Martinez, Sean Whitfield and Sam Dylan took home first place with a time of 11:21.48. Smith also took fifth in the 3K with a time of 9:27.40.
KeMarco Monger qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and collected a fourth place finish with a time of 9.00 seconds. In the prelims he ran an 8.98 to qualify fifth. Monger was also ninth in the 400 (53.64).
Mark Martin made his season debut in the men's long jump and jumped 6.32 meters to take sixth.
Goucher is slated to return to action Saturday, February 3 at Ursinus' Frank Colden Invitational.
