Thornton-Fillyaw Sets Landmark Women's 800 Indoor Record at Championship, Five Records Set
The men's program matched or broke four school records on Saturday.
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Sophomore Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw of the Goucher College women's indoor track and field team set the Landmark Conference record and won her second straight women's indoor 800-meter title at the Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Susquehanna Field House. The Gopher men's program matched one school record and broke two others.
Goucher's men placed sixth overall with 50 points, while the women were eighth with 18 points.
Thornton-Fillyaw's time of 2:11.51 broke the previous Landmark Conference record of 2:12.72 set by Susquehanna's Ashley West on March 4, 2014. She also broke West's Landmark Championship record of 2:14.80 set in 2016. Thornton-Fillyaw, who's time is currently No 3 in Division III, also bettered her own school record of 2:13.35 set last month at the George Mason Patriot Games.
In the men's long jump, first year Jaylin Briston took second and tied the program record with a leap of 6.84 meters. Briston matched the record set last Saturday by teammate Mark Martin. Martin finished seventh with a jump of 6.53 meters.
Martin broke his own record in the men's triple jump, recording a jump of 13.70 meters to place third overall. His previous record of 12.99 meters was set at Ursinus earlier this month. First year Aidan Kress finished fifth with a jump of 12.82 meters.
Senior Sean Whitfield broke his own men's 800 record by over five seconds, running a 1:56.31 to place second in the field. Whitfield's previous program record of 2:01.82 was set as a sophomore in 2022.
The men's 4x400 relay also bettered the program record to come in third, running a time of 3:30.39. The previous record of 3:32.10 was set in December. Saturday's relay consisted of Briston, Pani Marousis, KeMarco Monger and Whitfield.
In the men's 400, Monger finished third with a time of 52.34 seconds. Marousis came in fifth, clocking a time of 52.48.
The men's distance medley relay team, made up of Whitfield, Monger, Marousis and Jair Smith, finished fifth with an 11:03.74. The 4x200 men's team placed seventh, clocking in at 1:36.03. Kress, Deonte Lewis, Syncere Lewis and Martin made up that relay.
Ray Asiedu finished seventh in the women's 200, clocking in with a season-best 27.06 seconds. Asiedu narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 60-meter final, running 8.16 seconds to place ninth.
The women's 4x200 relay squad placed sixth with a time of 1:57.27, made up of Nora Neall, Skye Washington, Imaya Edmonds and Asiedu. The 4x400 also posted a sixth place finish, running 4:32.44. Edmonds, Daya Sathyaraj, Washington and Thornton-Fillyaw made up that relay.
Goucher's next scheduled event is the Tufts Final Qualifier on Saturday, March 2.
