No. 20 Captains Too Much for Gophers

TOWSON, Md. - No. 20 Christopher Newport jumped out to a 32-10 lead after one quarter and never looked back as it cruised to a 113-42 win over Goucher College in non-conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon in the second round of the Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Goucher (1-3) scored the game's first two points on an Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) basket 36 seconds into the game.
- A layup by Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas / Cristo Rey Jesuit) extended the lead to 4-0 at the 8:06 mark.
- After a McFadden basket at 7:08 made it 6-4 in favor of the Gophers, Christopher Newport (4-0) rattled off 10 straight points to go up 14-6.
- McFadden scored at 4:03 to make it 17-10 before the Captains reeled off the final 15 points of the half to take a 32-10 lead through 10 minutes.
- CNU scored the first five points of the second before a basket by Quarles at 8:26 halted the run.
- The Captains led 65-20 at intermission.
- Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) had Goucher's first field goal of the second half, a three, with 6:03 left in the frame.
- Williams scored eight straight points, including another three with 4:43 on the clock.
- Williams also had Goucher's first field goal of the fourth quarter just under four minutes in.
- Ta'Niya Kees (Baltimore, Md. / Our Lady of Mount Carmel) closed out Goucher's scoring with a layup in the final seconds.
- Christopher Newport shot 58.3% from the floor and was 8-21 behind the arc while going 21-32 at the free throw line.
- The Gophers shot 30.6% overall and were 2-8 from three and 10-17 at the stripe.
- The guests held a 45-28 rebound advantage.
- Williams led the Gophers with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
- Kees went 7-8 at the free throw line and finished with nine points in 10 minutes of play.
- Quarles, McFadden and Belle Carini (Haddam, Conn. / Haddam-Killingworth) each finished with six points.
- Goucher wraps up its three-game homestand Wednesday night when it hosts Stevenson in a 7 pm contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
