Mustangs Charge Past Gophers in Second Half

TOWSON, Md. - Trailing 33-31 at halftime, the Stevenson University women's basketball team rallied past Goucher College for a 63-51 non-conference victory Wednesday night at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- After Goucher (1-4) and Stevenson (1-2) traded baskets early, a 10-0 Gopher run capped by a conventional three-point play by Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) put the hosts up 12-3 with 4:07 left in the first period.
- Two free throws by Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) with 1:53 on the clock put Goucher on top 16-8.
- A late Mustang basket cut the Gopher lead to five, 16-11, after one.
- Back-to-back baskets by McFadden and Williams upped Goucher's lead to 20-11 at the 8:29 mark.
- After Stevenson cut the lead to five, four points by the Mustangs made it 24-15 on a Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas / Cristo Rey Jesuit) layup 5:32 before halftime.
- The guests cut the lead to one, 26-25, with 3:14 left.
- A three by Claire Flynn (Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck) made it 29-25 with 2:43 left.
- Trisha Tellian's fifth three of the half for Stevenson tied the game 29-29 before Belle Carini (Haddam, Conn. / Haddam-Killingworth) put the Gophers back in front with 1:32 to go.
- Sydney Nwuli (Severna Park, Md. / Severna Park) had Goucher's last field goal of the half as it went into the locker room ahead 33-31.
- Goucher went up four, 36-32, 3:26 into the second half on a basket by Williams.
- Stevenson used eight straight points to take a 40-36 lead with 4:31 on the clock on a Laci Johnson three.
- Williams converted a layup with 3:15 to go to halve the Mustang lead.
- The Mustangs scored the final seven points of the quarter to build a nine-point cushion, 47-38, through three.
- Stevenson scored the first six points of the fourth to increase its advantage to 15, 53-38.
- A three by Williams with 6:32 remaining halted the Mustang run.
- The Mustangs took their largest lead, 62-42, with just under four minutes left.
- Goucher held Stevenson without a field goal the rest of the way as it closed things on a 9-1 run.
- Williams scored a season-high 21 points, going 5-9 from the floor and 10-16 at the free throw line. She also grabbed six rebounds.
- McFadden scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half and also grabbed five rebounds.
- Quarles had her third double-digit rebounding effort of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds, including six offensive caroms, and added four points, two steals and a blocked shot.
- Nwuli grabbed seven rebounds.
- Goucher held a 51-41 rebounding advantage, including 18-13 on the offensive glass.
- The Gophers shot 28.6% for the game while the Mustangs shot 35.5% for the contest.
- Goucher got to the free throw line more than its opponent for the fourth time in five games, going 16-28 while Stevenson was 11-22 at the stripe.
