Gophers Can't Overcome Slow Start Against Scranton

TOWSON, Md. - Visiting University of Scranton reeled off its sixth straight victory as it jumped out to a 14-point lead after one quarter en route to a 65-35 Landmark Conference women's basketball victory over Goucher College at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center Saturday afternoon.
- Scranton (12-2, 4-0 Landmark) scored the game's first five points.
- Briyah Haggins (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) got Goucher (1-11, 0-4) on the board with a three at the 5:34 mark.
- The Royals held the Gophers without a field goal the rest of the period as they took a 19-5 lead through 10 minutes.
- Scranton scored the first 11 points of the second quarter.
- Julia Cavoli (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) snapped the Gopher scoring drought with two free throws 2:06 before intermission.
- Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) converted a layup in the closing seconds of the half as Goucher trailed 34-9 at the break.
- Haggins and Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) had back-to-back baskets in the first 1:11 of the second half for Goucher.
- The Gophers used a 9-2 run capped by a three by Cavoli with 3:20 on the clock to cut Scranton's lead to 18, 40-22.
- The Royals scored the final nine points of the third to build a 52-24 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
- McFadden had Goucher's first basket of the fourth quarter just over three minutes in.
- Haggins connected on her second three of the game with 1:29 left to close out the game's scoring.
- Haggins finished with a career-best 10 points to pace the Gophers.
- McFadden registered eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
- Quarles totaled seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds, her fifth double-digit rebounding effort on the season.
- Cavoli also tallied seven points.
- Quarles and McFadden each made three steals.
- Scranton, which outrebounded Goucher 43-30, shot 37.9% overall and was 9-30 behind the arc.
- The Gophers shot 35.7% overall in the second half and 26.1% for the game.
