Quarles Nets Double-Double in Setback Against No. 4 Scranton

TOWSON, Md. - Senior Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) of the Goucher College women's basketball team posted her eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds, but fourth-ranked and unbeaten Scranton was able to pull away in the second half for an 83-51 Landmark Conference women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Scranton (18-0, 8-0 Landmark) jumped out to a 10-0 lead 2:20 into the game.
- Goucher (3-15, 0-8) got on the board on a basket by Kyla Smith (Easton, Pa./Easton) at the 7:18 mark.
- The Royals extended their lead to 22-7 with 2:28 left in the period and led 25-11 after 10 minutes.
- Goucher pulled within 12, 28-16, on a Smith three with 5:38 left before halftime.
- After a Scranton three, back-to-back triples by Smith and Alexis Kuhlman (Mount Airy, Md./Herndon) pulled the Gophers into a single-digit deficit, 31-22, with 3:07 on the clock.
- The guests scored the final five points of the half and went into the locker room with a 36-22 advantage.
- The Gophers got the lead down to 12 twice, the second time on a Smith basket at the 7:48 mark that made it 38-26.
- Scranton used a 12-2 run capped by a free throw with 4:06 on the clock that made it a 50-28 ballgame.
- The guests scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 61-34 lead with 10 minutes left.
- Scranton scored the first eight points of the fourth before a Julia Cavoli (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) basket with six minutes left.
- Goucher closed the game on a 15-7 run, including two threes by Kuhlman and a three by Briyah Haggins (Waldorf, Md./Westlake).
- Quarles made all five of her field goal attempts and finished 3-4 at the free throw line. Six of her rebounds came at the offensive end.
- Kuhlman finished with a team-high 15 points, going 4-6 behind the arc and 5-10 overall.
- Smith finished in double figures for the 16th time in 17 games with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
- Goucher shot 30.8% overall, was 7-27 behind the arc and 4-9 at the free throw line. The Gophers were narrowly outrebounded by Scranton 42-41.
- The Royals, who are one of four remaining unbeaten teams in Division III women's basketball, shot 47% overall, were 12-32 from long range and 9-12 at the stripe.
- Goucher travels to Catholic on Wednesday evening for a 7 pm Landmark Conference contest.
- The Gophers are home next Saturday, February 4, welcoming Juniata for a 2 pm tip at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
