McFadden Reaches 1,000, Gophers Battle With No. 20 Elizabethtown on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College battled the nationally-ranked Elizabethtown College women's basketball team for three quarters before the Blue Jays pulled away for a 74-56 Landmark Conference victory on Goucher's Senior Day at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. Senior Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) scoored her 1,000th career point in her final collegiate game.
- Goucher (3-21, 0-14 Landmark) scored the game's first four points and led 8-3 just over four minutes into the game following a basket by McFadden.
- Elizabethtown (21-3, 11-3 Landmark) scored the next eight points to take an 11-8 lead with just over three minutes left in the quarter.
- The Gophers scored the next four points to take a 12-11 lead with 1:27 left in the quarter on a basket by Alexis Kuhlman (Mount Airy, Md./Herndon).
- Etown took a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.
- The Blue Jays held the Gophers scoreless for the first nearly four minutes of the second, opening a 17-12 lead.
- Etown built a 25-14 lead with just over four minutes to go in the half.
- A three by Kyla Smith (Easton, Pa./Easton) with 1:18 to go cut the Blue Jay lead to eight, 25-17.
- The guests led 29-29 at intermission.
- Goucher trailed 33-23 early in the second half when it used a 10-2 run capped by a McFadden three to pull within two, 35-33, with 5:40 left in the quarter.
- After a Blue Jay basket, a three from the corner by Julia Cavoli (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) with 4:57 on the clock pulled Goucher within one, 37-36.
- A free throw by Kuhlman with 3:34 remaining tied the game 37-37.
- Elizabethtown scored nine straight points to build a 46-37 lead before a Kuhlman free throw with just under a minute left halted the Etown run.
- The Blue Jays carried a 48-38 lead into the final frame.
- A layup by Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) with 8:27 on the clock pulled the Gophers within nine, 50-41.
- Etown scored the next five points before two free throws by McFadden put her over the 1,000 mark and made it 55-43 with six minutes to go.
- Goucher got the lead down to eight, 58-50, with 4:21 left on a basket by Smith.
- Elizabethtown closed the game outscoring the Gophers 16-6 to earn its 21st victory of the season.
- McFadden, who became the 12th player in program history to score 1,000 career points, finished with 13 to end at 1,001 for her career. She was 5-12 from the floor.
- Smith led Goucher with 18 points, reaching double figures for the 14th straight game and 23rd time in 24 games. She gtrabbed seven rebounds.
- Smith's 465 points this season are the most by a Gopher since Briana Bull scored 495 in the 2016-17 season.
- Kuhlman finished with 11 points off the bench and grabbed five rebounds, while Quarles narrowly missed her 11th double-double of the season, totaling nine points and 13 boards.
- Goucher whot 33.3% overall, was 4-15 behind the arc and 8-13 at the free throw line. The Gophers outrebounded Etown 44-38.
- The Blue Jays, who are ranked No. 20 in the WBCA Division III poll, shot 43% overall, went 6-17 behind the arc and 18-23 at the free throw line.
- Prior to the game, Goucher honored seniors Smith, Quarles, McFadden, Belle Carini (Haddam, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) and Claire Flynn (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck).
