Bison Rally Past Gophers in Season Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Visiting Gallaudet University closed the game on a 14-2 run as it rallied past Goucher College for an 84-82 non-conference women's basketball victory Friday night at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center in the opening round of the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Classic.
- Gallaudet (1-0) opened up a 12-6 lead midway through the first quarter.
- Two Merci Turner free throws pulled Goucher (0-1) within four, 12-8.
- The Bison pushed the lead to eight twice before taking a 22-16 lead after one quarter.
- The Gophers opened the second on an 8-2 run and a three by Maiya Villanueva tied the game 24-24 1:38 into the period.
- Goucher extended the run to 13-2 and a Zion McCoy basket put Goucher up 29-24 with 6:38 left before halftime.
- Gallaudet took a 32-31 lead with 4:02 to go, but the lead was short-lived as a Turner basket on Goucher's next possession put the Gophers back in front.
- The Gophers closed the half on an 8-2 run and took a 45-39 lead into halftime.
- A Julia Cavoli three at the 7:34 mark opened up a nine-point Goucher lead, 52-43.
- Gallaudet pulled within three, 57-53, before a Savannah Holmes basket and a Cavoli three made it a nine-point cushion again, 62-53.
- The Gophers took a 66-58 lead into the final frame.
- The Bison worked the lead down to five, 70-65, 2:29 into the final stanza.
- An 8-2 spurt capped by a triple by Darby Sherman with 5:29 to go put the Gophers in front 80-70.
- Gallaudet scored the next 12 points and a basket with 1:57 to go put the guests in front 82-80.
- Turner tied the game with a putback of her own miss with 1:37 on the clock.
- After the teams traded turnovers and Goucher came up empty, Claire Tucker scored with nine seconds left for the Bison to reclaim the lead.
- Goucher had a final look as time expired but it was off the mark.
- Turner led Goucher with 21 points and nine rebounds, going 7-14 from the floor and 7-8 at the free throw line.
- Brianna Johnson totaled 16 points and seven rebounds, while Villanueva knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 11 points.
- Villanueva also finished with six assists.
- Holmes recorded eight points, while Cavoli and Sherman had six apiece.
- The Gophers had 17 steals, with Villanueva, Johnson and Briyah Haggins recording three apiece.
- Goucher forced 35 Bison turnovers which it turned into 28 points.
- Goucher shot 34.8% overall, 8-34 behind the arc and 12-20 at the free throw line, while Gallaudet shot 425 from the floor, 1-3 from three and 11-22 at the stripe.
- Goucher's 82 points were its most in a game since a 93-43 win over Trinity Washington on November 26, 2018.
- Goucher is back in action Saturday when it hosts Albright at 4 pm in the second round of the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Classic.
