Lions Too Much for Gophers in Renie Amoss Finale

TOWSON, Md. - Albright College jumped out to a 45-24 halftime lead as it eased past Goucher College for an 85-49 non-conference women's basketball contest in the second round of the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- After Albright (1-1) scored the game's first six points, back-to-back Briyah Haggins threes brought Goucher (0-2) to a 6-6 tie 1:11 into the game.
- Goucher again tied the game 8-8 on a Savannah Holmes basket a minute later.
- The Gophers forged a 10-10 tie at the 5:53 mark on a Maiya Villanueva basket.
- A Villanueva three at the 1:46 mark cut Albright's lead to 16-15.
- The Lions scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 20-15 after 10 minutes.
- Albright scored the first six points of the second before a Julia Cavoli three made it 26-18 1:44 in.
- The Lions used a 14-0 run to build a 42-20 advantage 2:39 before halftime, with a Merci Turner basket halting the run.
- The guests carried a 45-24 lead into the locker room.
- Goucher kept pace with Albright for the first five minutes of the second half, with a Brianna Johnson basket making it 51-31 at the 5:37 mark.
- The Lions scored the final 15 points of the third to build a 66-31 cushion.
- Albright grew the lead to as many as 42 points in the final frame.
- Goucher closed the game with a 8-2 spurt capped by a Cavoli basket with 26 seconds to go.
- Goucher was led by Villanueva's 10 points as she paced a balanced scoring column.
- Turner recorded nine points and eight rebounds, while Haggins finished with eight points.
- Cavoli and Johnson added seven points apiece.
- Goucher, which was outrebounded 60-35, shot 34% from the floor, 7-20 from long range and 6-14 at the free throw line.
- Albright shot 39.8% overall, 6-18 from three and 13-21 at the charity stripe.
- Goucher travels to Salisbury on Wednesday evening for a 5 pm contest.
- The Gophers are back home next Saturday at 2 pm, entertaining McDaniel at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
