Gophers Fall in Battle With Unbeaten McDaniel

TOWSON, Md. - Visiting McDaniel College remained unbeaten with an 82-58 non-conference women's basketball victory over Goucher College Saturday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- The game was tied four times in the first five minutes, with a three by Goucher's (0-4) Julia Cavoli knotting the game 11-11 just past the midway point of the half.
- McDaniel (4-0) scored the next seven points to build an 18-11 lead with 2:27 to go.
- A Merci Turner three cut the lead to 18-14 with 1:18 to play.
- The Green Terror held a 24-17 lead through 10 minutes.
- Briyah Haggins knocked down a three two minutes into the second period to cut the lead to four, 24-20.
- McDaniel scored six straight to up its lead to 10, 30-20, with 6:59 on the clock.
- After a Brianna Johnson basket, the guests reeled off eight in a row to go up 38-22 with 3:33 left before intermission.
- A Turner basket with 1:28 on the clock whittled McDaniel's lead down to 12, 40-28.
- McDaniel led 45-30 at the break.
- An early three from Maiya Villanueva cut McDaniel's lead to 13, 46-33, just over a minute in.
- Thirteen straight points by the Green Terror put them in front 59-33 with 5:18 on the clock.
- A fast-break three by Villanueva with 1:57 left made it a 21-point lead for the hosts, 63-42.
- McDaniel led 68-43 with 10 minutes left.
- Goucher didn't allow McDaniel to pull away, and a free throw by Turner with just under four minutes to go made it 74-56, capping a 7-0 spurt.
- Johnson and Cavoli also had threes during the run.
- McDaniel scored the next six points and maintained at least a 22-point cushion the rest of the way.
- Turner led Goucher in scoring for the third time in four games with 22 points, going 6-14 from the floor and 9-11 at the free throw line.
- Villanueva knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 12 points while grabbing four rebounds.
- Cavoli and Johnson each knocked down two three-pointers and finished with eight points apiece.
- Johnson also grabbed 12 rebounds.
- Haggins chipped in with five points and eight boards.
- Goucher shot 32.2% overall, knocked down 10 of its 27 three-point attempts (37%) and was 10-15 at the free throw line.
- McDaniel, which outrebounded the Gophers 52-37, shot 39.2% overall, was 7-26 from long range and 13-16 at the stripe.
- Goucher is back in action Tuesday evening, traveling to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 5 pm non-conference tilt.
- The Gophers' next home game is Saturday, December 2, as they host Drew in Landmark Conference action at 4 pm.
