Three Reach Double Figures in Setback to Moravian

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College placed three players in double figures, paced by Maiya Villanueva's 15 points, but visiting Moravian University dealt the Gophers a 72-58 Landmark Conference women's basketball victory Wednesday evening at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Moravian (2-5, 2-1 Landmark) led 8-2 2:38 into the contest.
- Goucher (0-8, 0-3) used a 9-4 spurt capped by a Brianna Johnson basket to pull within one, 12-11, with just over four minutes left in the opening period.
- Up 14-13, the Greyhounds scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 18-13 after 10 minutes.
- A Merci Turner three 2:31 into the second cut Moravian's lead to one, 20-19.
- After the Greyhounds scored the next four points, a free throw followed by a Villanueva triple again made it a one-point lead for the guests, 24-23.
- Moravian scored the next eight points to build a nine point lead before a Briyah Haggins basket at the buzzer made it 32-25 at intermission.
- Moravian made its first five field goal attempts of the second half to take a 42-25 lead 2:20 into the third.
- A Villanueva three with 6:45 on the clock halted a 12-0 Greyhound run.
- The guests' lead swelled to 24, 55-31, with 1:38 left in the period.
- A Julia Cavoli three with just unver a minute left cut it to 19, 55-36, but the guests answered with a triple and led 58-36 with 10 minutes left.
- Moravian took its largest lead, 66-39, with 5:31 left.
- Goucher outscored the Greyhounds 12-2 over the next three-plus minutes and a basket by Johnson with 2:26 to go made it 68-51.
- Another Johnson basket in the final minute cut the guests' lead to 12, 70-58, before Moravian had a final basket to account for the final.
- Villanueva finished 3-9 from three and 6-15 overall to pace the Gophers.
- Johnson made all six of her free throw attempts on the evening and totaled 14 points.
- Cavoli was 3-4 from long range and added 11 points.
- Turner registered nine points, five rebounds, four steals, three assists and a pair of blocked shots.
- Haggins grabbed nine rebounds.
- Goucher finished 19-62 (30.6%) from the floor, 9-28 from three and 11-16 at the free throw line.
- The Greyhounds, who outrebounded the Gophers 50-31, shot 46.5% overall, 2-15 behind the arc and 4-8 at the charity stripe.
- Goucher travels to sixth-ranked and unbeaten Scranton on Saturday afternoon for a 4 pm Landmark Conference contest.
- The Gophers are back home on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, hosting Wilkes in a 4 pm contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
