Smith Contributes Eight Goals to 13-11 Win Over Poets

Shaner Turns Away Six Free-Position Shots, Finishes with 13 Saves
WHITTIER, Calif. — Becca Smith (Leesburg,
Va./Heritage) scored five times in the first half and
tallied three additional goals in the second half in leading
Goucher past Whittier, 13-11, tonight in the first of two games the
Gophers are scheduled to play on their Spring Break trip to
California.
The Gophers (3-3) had already taken a 2-0 lead on goals by Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) when Smith stuck her first goal with 17:21 remaining in the first half. The sophomore attacker accounted for all four of Goucher's goals over the final 7:10, including the unassisted goal with :04 showing on the clock that provided her team with a 7-4 advantage at the break.
Smith scored twice off of free-position shots in the second half, both times to put Goucher ahead by three goals, and then her eighth goal of the contest with 12:11 remaining made the score 12-7 in favor of the Gophers. After an unassisted goal by Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) put head coach Katie Trainor's squad up 13-7, the Poets (2-3) scored the final four goals of the contest, closing to within 13-11 on an unassisted goal by Alex Holtz with 2:47 left to play.
Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) started in goal for the Gophers and made 13 saves, six of them on free-position attempts as the Poets converted only one of their nine free-position shots into a goal.
