Golden Wolves Too Much for Gophers

READING, Pa. - Host Alvernia University scored the game's first three goals and never trailed, besting Goucher College 21-6 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at the Alvernia Turf Field.
- Alvernia (3-1) staked itself to a 3-0 lead 2:23 into the game.
- Goucher (0-3) scored the next two goals, with senior Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) recording back-to-back tallies at 9:48 and 6:16.
- The Golden Wolves reeled off three more goals to up their lead to 6-2 with 2:40 left in the first.
- Emily Burk (Nottingham, Md./Perry Hall) scored on a free position with 1:49 remaining to make it 6-3, which remained the score after 15 minutes.
- After the hosts scored two minutes in to make it 7-3, Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) scored an unassisted tally 11:53 before halftime.
- The two teams again traded goals, with a Flinn free position at the 8:44 mark making it 8-5.
- Alvernia scored the final four goals before intermission to take a 12-5 lead into the break.
- Alvernia rattled off four straight goals, including back-to-back man up tallies, to increase its lead to 16-5.
- Flinn stopped the run with another free position goal with 2:33 on the clock.
- The Golden Wolves scored with 28 seconds left to again reclaim an 11-goal cushion.
- Alvernia scored all four goals in the fourth, including three in the game's final 5:25.
- Alvernia outshot Goucher 43-21 on the evening.
- Draw controls were virtually split with the Golden Wolves coming up with 15 of 28 draws. Lia Oren (Milwaukee, Wisc./Nicolet) finished with seven draw controls for the Gophers.
- Bella McKinney (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and Elizabeth Green (Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Charter for the Arts) each had three draw controls.
- Goalie Belle Christ (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) made 10 saves in the first 42:04 and also had six ground balls. Sydney Lewis (Baltimore, Md./Carver) recorded five stops the rest of the way.
- Flinn finished with three goals, while Gazzola notched two and Burk had a goal and an assist.
- Gazzola had recorded multiple goals in 10 straight games dating back to the end of the 2019 season.
- Goucher is back home on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg in a 1 pm contest at Beldon Field.
