Gazzola Records 100th Career Point, Gophers Not Rattled by Sabres

TOWSON, Md. - Senior Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) scored 10 goals, in the process recording her 100th career point, as the Goucher College women's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season with an 18-4 triumph over Marian (Wis.) University Wednesday afternoon at Beldon Field.
- Gazzola got Goucher (1-4) on the board just 1:52 into the game.
- The Gophers scored six goals in the quarter, with Gazzola and Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) each scoring twice.
- Flinn also assisted on two of Gazzola's tallies.
- Minami Ushijima (Nishinomiya, Japan / Keimei Gakuin) scored 1:08 into the second to increase the Gopher lead to 7-0.
- Marian (0-3) scored back-to-back goals at 11:39 and 9:20 to pull within 7-2.
- Gazzola scored two of Goucher's four goals the rest of the half as the hosts led 11-2 at the break.
- Amelia Lazzini (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) and Emily Burk (Nottingham, Md./Perry Hall) also scored, with Lazzini recording her first collegiate goal.
- Gazzola scored her sixth goal of the game 1:27 into the third.
- The Sabres scored at 11:28 to make it 12-3.
- After Lazzini scored at the 10:42 mark, Gazzola rattled off three straight goals to make it 16-3 with 15 minutes left.
- Izzy Newton scored for the guests just over four minutes into the final frame.
- Gazzola scored her 100th career point with her 10th goal at the game with 6:18 left.
- Burk closed out the scoring with 3:08 to go.
- Gazzola's 10 goals were two shy of the program single-game record of 12.
- Gazzola has totaled 82 goals and 18 assists in 26 career games.
- Flinn totaled three goals and five assists, while Lazzini and Burk each scored two goals.
- Molly Smith (Damascus, Md.) finished with five caused turnovers, while Yoyo Karuma (Chiba, Japan / Aoyama Gakuin) had three.
- Gazzola recorded nine draw controls.
- Elizabeth Green (Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Charter for the Arts) picked up four ground balls.
- Belle Christ (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and Sydney Lewis (Baltimore, Md./Carver) each played a half in goal and made three saves apiece.
- The Gophers outshot the Sabres 30-11.
- Goucher is set to travel to DeSales for a 1 pm non-conference game on Saturday, March 12.
