Gwynedd Mercy Holds Off Gophers' Fourth Quarter Push

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College women's lacrosse team scored back-to-back goals early in the fourth quarter to tie the game 10-10, but visiting Gwynedd Mercy University responded with the game's final three goals to close out a 13-10 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at Beldon Field.
- Goucher (2-10) got on the board 1:10 into the game on a goal by Elizabeth Green (Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Charter for the Arts).
- The Griffins (7-5) tied the game 1-1 on a free position goal 3:07 into the contest.
- Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) put the Gophers back in front with 9:34 left in the first on an assist by Green.
- Gwynedd Mercy tied the game 2:45 later, then took a 3-2 lead with 2:31 to go in the opening period.
- Emily Burk (Nottingham, Md./Perry Hall) tied the game for the hosts 11:26 before halftime.
- The Griffins reclaimed the lead with 10:22 on the clock.
- Goucher scored three times in a span of 77 seconds to build a 6-4 lead.
- Gazzola recorded back-to-back unassisted tallies at 5:05 and 3:47, then Lia Oren (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) scored at the 3:38 mark to make it 6-4.
- Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) assisted on the goal.
- A free position goal by the Griffins cut the lead to one 1:33 before the break.
- Burk's second goal of the game 13 seconds before intermission gave Goucher a 7-5 halftime lead.
- The guests scored three times in the first 3:04 of the second half to take an 8-7 lead.
- A goal by Mackenzie Nase (Weare, N.H./John Stark) at 8:33 off an assist by Gazzola tied the game for the sixth time.
- The Griffins scored twice at 4:13 and 2:33 to carry a 10-8 lead into the final frame.
- Nase scored off a feed from Gazzola 37 seconds into the fourth.
- With just under 13 minutes left, Gazzola converted a free position for her fourth goal of the game.
- Goucher won the ensuing faceoff but came up empty, and a goal by the Griffins with 10:19 left put the visitors back in front.
- Gwynedd Mercy tacked on two more goals at 2:57 and 1:31 on free positions to seal the victory.
- Gwynedd Mercy generated a 31-26 shot advantage for the contest.
- Goucher won 17 of the game's 23 draw controls, with Oren finishing with 12.
- Gazzola recorded four goals and three assists to extend her goal scoring streak to 20 games.
- Nase and Burk each scored twice, while Green added a goal and an assist.
- Flinn's assist moved her to 98 career points.
- Delany Comerford (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) registered three caused turnovers.
- Sydney Lewis (Baltimore, Md./Carver) made eight saves. She played the first half in goal, then re-entered with 2:33 left in the third.
- Belle Christ (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) recorded three saves in 12:27 of action.
- Goucher is back in action Saturday when it travels to Moravian for a 1 pm Landmark Conference contest.
- The Gophers return home on Saturday, April 23, when they welcome Drew to Beldon Field for a 1 pm matchup.
