GK Ricketts Makes 14 Saves in Final Game of CareerOctober 28, 2006
WASHINGTON, DC — Goucher's 2006 season came to an
end today when the Gophers were beaten by second-seeded Catholic,
2-0, in the quarterfinals of the Capital Athletic Conference
championship tournament.
Following a scoreless first half in which the Cardinals (11-6-1)
unleashed 14 shots, Catholic capitalized on a corner kick to get on
the scoreboard less than four minutes into the second half. Elyse
Bellardini took the corner, dropping the ball perfectly in the box
where Helene Nicoletti was able to get a foot on it and tally her
first goal of the season.
The Gophers (3-13-1) stayed within a goal of the Cardinals until
Bellardini got into the scoring act herself in the 85th minute. She
got the ball at the top of the box, weaved through the entire left
side of Goucher defenders and smashed it into the right corner,
putting Catholic ahead 2-0.
The Cardinals finished with a 32-2 edge in shots. Stephanie
Ricketts (Baltimore, MD/Parkville), one of three seniors
on Goucher's roster this season, went the distance in goal, making
14 saves.
