TOWSON, Md. - Despite a 14-save performance by goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, MA/Algonquin Regional), Goucher lost to Widener, 6-0, on Beldon Field this afternoon.
The Pride (12-2-1) bolted out to a 5-0 lead in the first 27:14 of the contest. Caryinna Yenchak tallied the first two goals of the contest at 7:46 and 15:45 before Sam Hand (20:00), Melanie Miller (26:36) and Caitlin McKenna (27:14) got into the scoring act.
Hand, who picked up an assist on Miller's goal, scored the lone goal of the second half with 6:41 left to play.
The Gophers (3-9) were limited to three shots, but Widener goalkeeper Alee Gunter had to stop each one in order to preserve the shutout.
Including the 14 saves she made today, Matthews has turned away 132 of the 282 shots opponents have attempted through the first 12 games of the season.
