TOWSON, Md. - Goucher's Kellen Matthews (Northboro, MA/Algonquin Regional) made a serious run at the Landmark Conference record for saves in a game during the Gophers' 5-0 loss to Catholic today.
Matthews established the record with her 22-save performance against Susquehanna on Sept. 29. Today she faced a total of 48 shots and turned away 21 of them. She was particularly busy in the second half, making 15 saves.
The Cardinals (9-1-3, 2-0-2 Landmark) didn't solve the freshman goalkeeper until the 22nd minute of play when Kelly Anderson set up a goal by Alix McDonald. An unassisted goal by Elyse Bellardini provided Catholic with a 2-0 lead at halftime.
With their 29 shots in the second half, the Cardinals were able to produce goals by Jenna Graham at 53:31, Sara Cooke at 69:44 and Bellardini at 82:50.
In her 13 starts for the Gophers (3-10, 0-4 Landmark), Matthews has made 153 saves.
