Sophomore Tallies Every Goal in Gophers' 5-0 Victory
October 7, 2008
TOWSON, Md. – No longer is Katie Miller the only player in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program to score five goals in a game. And Tara Haag is no longer the only goalkeeper to ever suit up for the Gophers and record eight shutouts during her career.
During Goucher's 5-0 victory over Trinity (D.C.) at Beldon Field today, sophomore forward Sisley Pumilia (Chesterfield, N.H./Keene) tallied all five goals, matching a performance by Miller against the same opponent back in 2006. And sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) turned away all three shots that the Tigers (3-9) were able to get off to earn the eighth shutout of her career, matching Haag's total from 2001-04.
The five goals Pumilia scored today bring her total for the season to 19, one shy of the all-time school record for goals in a season.
"Sisley is having an amazing season," head coach Tati Korba commented after the game. "And everything she's accomplishing is appropriate because she truly is a talented player and absolutely the hardest-working player on the team. No doubt she's going to be setting even more records before her career is over."
Pumilia opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 8:01 and put the Gophers (5-4-1) ahead 2-0 when she stuck another one at 11:37, using a feed from Sarah Lodge (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown).
There were assists on all three of Pumilia's goals in the second half: by McKenna Wilkinson (Keene, N.H./Keene) at 54:24, Kanika Staten (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) at 60:36 and Nicole Sanfilippo (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./The Wheatley School) at 62:59.
The Gophers finished with a commanding 33-3 edge in shots.
