LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Goucher women's soccer program's records for most goals in a season and for most shutouts in a career were both broken today – obviously by different individuals.
Sisley Pumilia (Spofford, N.H./Keene) first had to tie Sarah Weaver's single-season record of 20 goals established in 1997, which she did when she provided the Gophers (6-6-1) with a 1-0 lead over Lincoln today with an unassisted goal at 54:06. The sophomore forward/midfielder then overtook Weaver when she tallied her 21st goal of the season at 67:30 to close out the scoring in a 3-0 triumph over the Lions (4-10-2).
For good measure, Pumilia was also awarded an assist on a goal by Sarah Lodge (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) at 66:26 that put the Gophers ahead 2-0.
With her two-goal, one-assist performance today, Pumilia tied the school record for points in a season, which also belonged to Weaver and dates back to 1997. With her 21 goals and six assists through 13 games, Pumilia's season total stands at 48 points.
It wasn't until the last second ran off the clock today that the all-time record for career shutouts officially belonged to sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional). She earned her sixth shutout of the season – and ninth of her career –by making saves on three of Lincoln's five shots.
On the same day she passed Tara Haag (2001-04) in career shutouts, Matthews also tied the single-season record of six shutouts set in 1995 by Lauren Pozsonyi.
"We certainly had a lot to celebrate today besides a win that gets us back to .500 heading into a stretch of three straight Landmark Conference games," said a beaming head coach Tati Korba after the non-conference contest. "Kellen and Sisley are both extremely deserving of these records and are so valuable to our program. Sisley has at least five more games to add to her record for goals in a season and Kellen has an additional two years to add to her total."
Ali Philippides (West Simsbury, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) picked up an assist on Pumilia's record-breaking goal.
