TOWSON, Md. — On the day that senior Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) became the first goalkeeper in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program to reach 500 career saves, the Gophers held a 1-0 lead over Drew for more than 18 minutes.
But midway through the first half, the Rangers got on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by Emily Weida that created a 1-1 tie. Weida scored again in the second half and so did Christine Meconi as Drew rallied for a 3-1 victory today in a Landmark Conference game played on Beldon Field.
Matthews made a total of 14 saves in the game, the first of which was the 500th of her four-year career at Goucher. The historic save was on a shot by Meconi in the sixth minute.
The Gophers (2-6-1, 0-2 Landmark) were already ahead 1-0 when Matthews attained her milestone thanks to an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) at 3:11. Kettner took a shot that goalkeeper Kim Jaikisson of the Rangers made a play on, but Kettner was able to gather the rebound and shoot into an empty net.
Weida's first goal at 21:54 had the two teams knotted up at 1-1 at the end of the first half and her second goal at 53:30 put the Rangers (6-4, 2-0 Landmark) ahead to stay. Meconi closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 72:17.
