Matthews Keeps Crusaders Off Scoreboard Until 57th Minute
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — It wasn't until Julie Briskey's unassisted goal off a direct kick in the 57th minute that Goucher fell behind in its Landmark Conference game against Susquehanna today. But the Gophers surrendered another goal in the 59th minute that enabled the Crusaders to record a 2-0 victory.
There was no scoring in the first half even though the Crusaders (4-7-1, 1-2 Landmark) enjoyed a 10-2 edge in shots because junior goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) made five saves for the Gophers (2-7-2, 0-3 Landmark).
Susquehanna continued to hold a clear offensive advantage over the first 15 minutes of the second half and finally capitalized on it when Briskey stuck her direct kick from 30 yards out at 56:26.
The second goal was scored at 58:32 by Kelly Bassett. During a scrum in front of the net, Marissa DePorto managed to get off a shot that was saved by Matthews, but Bassett was able to poke in the rebound while Matthews was still on the ground.
Matthews finished with eight saves.
The Gophers got off four shots over the final 28 minutes of the contest and goalie Rachel Norbuts had to make plays on three of them to complete the shutout.
