Senior GK Makes 13 Saves, Allows One Goal in Pair of Wins
MADISON, N.J. — For her roles in a pair of victories last week, Goucher's Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) today was selected Defensive Women's Soccer Player of the Week in the Landmark Conference for Oct. 18-24.
For starters, the senior goalkeeper turned in an 11-save performance on Tuesday in leading the Gophers to a 2-0 triumph over Catholic, the defending Landmark Conference champions. Her eight saves in the first half were crucial to Goucher owning a 1-0 lead at the break even though the Cardinals enjoyed a sizeable 18-2 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes.
Down the stretch after the Gophers had tacked on an insurance goal, Matthews made plays on shots by Mary McGann and Courtney Orgill to put the finishing touches on the 14th shutout of her four-year career.
Matthews, the all-time leader in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program with 552 career saves, was credited with a pair of saves in Saturday's 2-1 win over Wesley.
