SCRANTON, Pa. — For Goucher to end the 2010 season with a four-game winning streak, head coach Tati Korba's Gophers were going to have to go on the road today and knock off the team that had already clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's Landmark Conference postseason tournament.
The Gophers will have to settle for going 3-1 over their final four games because Scranton came out on top, 4-0, this afternoon.
The Royals (13-4-1, 6-0 Landmark) had scored all four of their goals before sophomore defender Kitty McIlroy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills School) got off Goucher's first shot of the contest 13:38 into the second half. Goals by Christina Cognetti at 12:30, Kaitlyn Greeley at 28:58 and Sydney Parker at 33:20 had Scranton ahead 3-0 at halftime and Caroline Corasaniti's goal just :46 into the second period made it 4-0.
The only other shot for the Gophers (5-9-2, 1-5 Landmark) besides the one by McIlroy was taken by senior midfielder Sisley Pumilia (Spofford, N.H./Keene) in the 77th minute. It was the only shot on which goalkeeper Caitlin Byrne of the Royals had to make a save in order to earn the shutout.
The Royals finished with 22 shots.
